Story: Life certainly can be strange and though we often believe so in youth, nothing is assured. Most people hit a road bump as they transition to adulthood, becoming briefly shaken before adjusting and moving forward. Others however, face one traumatic event after the other and eventually condition themselves towards skepticism and wariness. This story is peppered with a touch of both.

Growing up Roxanne had a nearly idyllic childhood until around the age of seven when her parents switched, rather abruptly, from an open and adventurous environment to one ruled by paranoia and emotional distress. In the span of three years her once stable life was entirely capsized. By eleven she had been pulled from school and was rarely allowed to leave the run down apartment they lived in for fear of some unknown threat.

Another year passed like this until the oppressive atmosphere came to a disturbing apex. As Roxanne slept her dreams were interrupted by the sound of an echoing bang. When she went to investigate she found... nothing. There was no intruder, no signs of struggle and no one to reply when she called out. So of course she did the only practical thing, she waited. Her parents loved her. The wouldn't just abandon her.

Over the next few days of solitude and searching, she found only a few clues to what she would eventually discover to be the disappearance of her parents; their bag of emergency supplies was left untouched, her father's wallet still sat on the coffee table where it stayed until he left and the strangest piece of the puzzle was a journal the curious pre-teen found while looking for an explanation. It stated times and dates with strange cryptic entries of events.

Eventually running out of resources she ventured out and spent a few nights on the streets before she was picked up by a police officer and sent to stay with a foster family while the authorities attempted to find her family. Years passed and she was passed from one family to another until she finally settled into a home for kids that were just a few years from being able to legally take care of themselves.

Life normalized around her bit she couldn't quite shake the need to discover what had really happened to her parents. The official report stated she had been abandoned... but Roxanne didn't believe it. Not only would her parents never do that, but there was evidence they had essentially vanished. As time continued on the lonely, strange little girl became a woman obsessed with uncovering hidden truths.
